Are you a German teacher interested in engaging your students in the 'migration' debate?

NOTE: The education pack is in German language and therefore only suitable for the German speaking classroom.

Migration is a hotly debated topic in Australia – and around the world. What are the drivers in people's decision to leave their home country? What life and loved ones do they leave behind? What conditions do they find themselves in in their new country of settlement? How can society gain a better understanding of migration and migrants?

If you are a German teacher and would like to introduce the topic of 'migration' to your students, the publication Ein bisschen Heimat im Gepaeck will be of valuable assistance. It is a literary close-up of the stories of thirteen German migrants who settled in Australia between 1935–1979.

Through these personal stories, students will find it easier to understand the difficulties migrants might face in settling down; what it means to be 'different', not to know unwritten rules and conventions, and what role 'Heimat'* means in our lives.

'Heimat' is a German concept (and there is no literal translation into English). People are bound to their heimat by their birth and their childhood, their language, their earliest experiences or acquired affinity. [Wikipedia]
